Oregon Flowers

Discover why Oregon Flowers, a Dutch-inspired family business, relies on Hortica's 135+ years of insurance expertise to help protect their American dream.

“We used to be with a local insurance company in town and when I started looking at Hortica, I right away had the feeling that they understood our business.”

Quality insurance tailored to your business

The American Dream

Rooted in family values and Dutch traditions, Oregon Flowers has bloomed into a thriving cut flower business in the heart of Willamette Valley. Martin Meskers and his wife, Helene, started Oregon Flowers in 1985—six years after emigrating from Holland.

In 1979, the Meskers moved from the Netherlands to Oregon to work for Oregon Bulb Farm, a top lily breeding company. After three years, they pursued their American Dream by establishing Oregon Flowers, a family-run cut flower greenhouse.

Flowers grown with a Dutch touch

Oregon Flowers sources top-quality bulbs from both the northern and southern hemispheres, ensuring a commitment to quality, consistency, and reliability in every stem they produce.

Today, the Mesker family, including their adult children, specializes in cultivating and selling lilies, tulips, calla lilies, and seasonal flowers. Their products are distributed to wholesalers and specialty retailers throughout the United States and Canada.

Operational excellence

Operating from modern facilities, and utilizing cutting-edge equipment imported from the Netherlands, Oregon Flowers employs state-of-the-art forcing rooms, rooting rooms, and climate-controlled greenhouses to guarantee fresh cut flowers year-round.

Just as their customers rely on them for quality flowers throughout the year, Oregon Flowers relies on Hortica's 135+ years of operational expertise in horticultural business insurance. Helping safeguard their equipment and facilities is an important aspect of Hortica’s support.

Decades of trust in Hortica

For nearly three decades, Oregon Flowers has trusted Hortica's knowledge to complement their dedication to excellence. “If we ever would have a major problem, they’re going to be there for us,” said Martin. “I feel we're partnered with the best in terms of reliability and expertise.”

However, the Meskers initially worked with a local insurance company in their community. Martin recalls,  “When I started looking at Hortica, I right away had the feeling they understood our business. We are, as flower growers, greenhouse operators, and nurseries, a unique industry. So it’s nice to be able to have an insurance company that’s unique with us.”

The future is bright

Oregon Flowers is a testament to the power of family, tradition, and the American Dream. With an unwavering commitment to quality and a passion for flowers, the Meskers have built a thriving business that is a major supplier of cut flowers to the North American market.

High standards and a deep understanding of the horticultural industry also guide their insurance selection.

“I’m pretty involved with the Society of American Florists, and Hortica supports that, so I want to support Hortica. If you know your money is being spent on your industry instead of going to a big conglomerate that would never do anything to help our industry, I think it just makes sense for nursery and greenhouse people, flower farmers, and others to support an insurance company that supports our industry. It’s a no-brainer.”
