As you work to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19, there are steps you can take to help keep you and others healthy.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) website is the best source for current information on preventing exposure to COVID-19 through preparedness, social distancing, strong hygiene and handwashing, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. The CDC has a section on its website dedicated to businesses and employers, which contains step-by-step guidelines for mitigating COVID-19 infection at your workplace.
Assign someone at your business to review this website regularly and coordinate the distribution of information to your employees. Education, and following up on good information with appropriate action, can help reduce COVID-19 exposure and prevent further business disruption.
Keeping your work areas clean and disinfected helps reduce the spread of viruses. While there are many types of cleaning products available, the Center for Biocide Chemistries has published information on EPA-registered and widely available cleaning products that are effective against coronavirus. Disinfecting wipes, such as Clorox® and Lysol® products, are easy to use and travel with. Disinfect work areas and break rooms several times per day. Be sure to clean high-touch surfaces and commonly used items, such as cell phones and computers.
As an alternative to using wipes, a diluted bleach solution is highly effective against coronavirus. Use one-quarter cup of bleach per one gallon of cold water. Spray it on high-touch surfaces, but carefully avoid items that could be damaged by bleach (for example, electronic surfaces, clothes, fabrics, and wood). Once mixed, use the solution within 24 hours; after that, its disinfecting ability begins to degrade. Other alternatives include rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.
One of the easiest and most effective ways you can fight the spread of COVID-19 is washing your hands. Encourage your employees to regularly clean their hands during expected breaks. Make sure you havehand-sanitizing stations employees can access throughout their day while working.
If certain roles in your organization require direct contact with the public, and social distancing isn’t possible, use personal protective equipment (PPE). Gloves, masks, and eye protection can help reduce exposure.
