Homeowners policies include both property and liability coverages. Property insurance protects your home itself, other structures located on your property such as garages and swimming pools, as well as your personal belongings, whether in your home or elsewhere. Liability insurance provides protection against lawsuits (including defense costs) for injuries or property damage caused by you, family members residing with you and your pets. Additional living expense coverage pays additional costs (such as hotel bills and restaurant meals) you incur because you are forced to live away from your home due to damage caused by a covered loss.
Special versions of homeowners policies are available for owners of high value homes, older homes and for those who live in apartments or condos.
Optional coverages include:
- Mine Subsidence
- Backup of sewers or drains
- Special coverage for guns, jewelry, fine arts and other valuable property
- Breakdown of mechanical systems
Points to consider:
- Are your home and personal belongings insured for current (depreciated) values, or for full replacement cost?
- Keeping in mind that replacement cost often exceeds purchase price or market value, in the event of a disaster will your current insurance limit be enough to reconstruct your home?
- More than a quarter of flood damage occurs in areas not considered at high risk for flooding. (Hortica writes flood insurance.)
A home is one of the biggest investments we make. It’s where we spend precious moments and make lasting memories. It’s something we share with loved ones. Is your home adequately protected? Homeowners insurance gives you peace of mind knowing that not only is your home’s physical structure protected, but also what’s inside.
What’s covered in a typical homeowners insurance policy? It provides protection for homes occupied by owners, other structures such as garages or pools, personal property and additional expenses incurred if your home is damaged. Art, jewelry or other high-valued items are often specifically scheduled on “personal article” floaters. Hortica understands that while loss or damage to your home’s physical structure would be devastating, the loss or damage to all the things that make a house a home would be even worse. That’s why we work to protect it at replacement cost.
Personal liability protection is also provided. Should any bodily injuries or property damage occur on your property, personal liability has you covered, including defense costs. It also covers any family members that live in the household, and even your pets!
Think homeowners insurance is only needed by those who own single-family homes on large plots of land? Hortica believes that every home, no matter the shape, size or location, deserves equal and ample protection, and we’ll work with you to find a customized insurance solution that meets your needs. So whether you live in a small apartment or condo, a sprawling estate or anything in between, we’ll work within your budget to make sure the structure, its contents and the people and pets who reside there are all covered in the event of an emergency.
