Most of you reading this blog are already familiar with the Society of American Florists (SAF), one the oldest floral organizations in the country. The SAF represents all segments of the industry—from retailers and growers to wholesalers, importers, suppliers, and more.
But how many of you have attended an SAF Annual Convention? This year’s SAF convention, now in its 133rd running, will take place Sept. 6-9 in Palm Beach, Florida.
The convention touts its abilities to offer world-class business training, powerful connections, and creative inspiration. This includes educational programs that look at the latest trends with customers and suppliers. Some of the programs for this year’s event include:
- The future of the retail florist
- Breeding future floriculturists
- Preparing millennials for leadership
- How to stand out on social media
- Rejuvenate your yuletide business
- Photos that sell
- Identifying and correcting financial mistakes
One of the best features of the SAF Annual Convention is getting to see the work of some of the best growers from around the world. The Outstanding Varieties area is open all day Friday through Sunday of the show’s run.
Attendees can review more than 5,000 stems of the best flowers and unique plants on the market during one of the industry’s biggest flower and plant competitions. Dozens of growers and breeders exhibit their finest cut flowers, greens, potted flowering plants, bedding plants, and foliage for top honors. Plus, you can vote for your favorite to win the People’s Choice award.

The SAF Annual Convention also offers the Premier Products Showcase—educational products demonstrations—that can feature your items.
Four expert product promoters from Professional Floral Communicators – International will display and demonstrate your products to the convention audience and deliver your sales message. After the demonstrations, retail floral shop owners and wholesalers visit the display tables where you can talk one-on-one with potential buyers. Sylvia Cup design competition
On Saturday, you can watch as some of the nation’s best floral designers are given the same flowers, foliage, and design supplies and have just two hours to create the surprise challenge.
This event showcases the hottest emerging design styles, while offering a live demonstration of how to create spectacular floral pieces in minimal time. This is the U.S. floral industry’s only live national design competition.
