Many of you are already familiar with the Society of American Florists (SAF), one the oldest floral organizations in the country. The SAF represents all segments of the industry—from retailers and growers to wholesalers, importers, and suppliers.
But did you know the SAF also helps members connect with lawmakers to bring attention to floricultural issues and how laws and regulations affect them? That’s what will happen at the 38th Congressional Action Days. This year, it’ll be March 12 and 13 in Washington, D.C.
According to the SAF, the event is designed to let attendees experience the power of personal involvement in the lawmaking process. Over two days, they learn about the industry’s issues and how to put their influence to work on Capitol Hill. This year’s event includes:
- Issues and advocacy training
- White House briefing with administration advisors
- Special speakers and receptions
“CAD is a great way for all of us in the floral industry to connect with each other,” says Mona Haberer, Business Segment Executive at Hortica. “It’s also a chance to visit Capitol Hill and talk to lawmakers who will hear directly from those who work in the industry—instead of professional lobbyists.”
Realizing not everyone has lobbying or legislative experience. SAF leaders make a point of helping attendees by matching them up with a veteran participant or SAF staff member to help them navigate Capitol Hill. The goals are simple:
- Expand awareness of the floral industry
- Build support for the industry’s most critical issues
- Strengthen the foundation for future generations
Those meetings do make a difference. Last year, 119 growers, wholesalers, retailers, and suppliers from 30 states asked lawmakers to increase floriculture research funding. That led to the House Appropriations Committee writing a recommendation that doubled their requested amount of $250,000. Other successes included stopping the Border Adjustment Tax and renewing the call for comprehensive immigration reform.
Hortica is proud to once again sponsor the event’s Hospitality Suite. It’s a place where you can stop by to grab lunch or snacks, chat with other attendees, and send thank-you messages to those you visited. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.
