That’s where our Key Partner, the Western Nursery & Landscape Association (WNLA), comes in. Founded in 1890 by a group of horticulture industry leaders, they set out to recruit nursery firms west of the Mississippi River to create the Western Nurseryman’s Association. Since then, the name has changed and the group’s influence has grown throughout the Midwest.
The WNLA is designed to promote social and educational networking for its members. They include independent retailers, landscapers, contractors, designers and architects, wholesale and greenhouse growers, and horticultural educators, among others.
According to its website, the nonprofit is committed to:
- Engaging and interacting with members on a year-round basis
- Celebrating plants with a purpose while highlighting and promoting the environmental and social benefits of horticulture
- Creating a community for green industry professionals to interact and develop professional relationships that will enhance their lives and careers
- Engaging the next generation of horticulture professionals and delivering relative content based on input
Education is a big focus for the WNLA. It offers its members a series of online resources and webinars covering a variety of topics such as new plants, native plants, management, and plants with purpose. The hope is to educate the next generation of horticulture professionals.
The WNLA also sponsors an annual trade show and educational event—The Western. It features exhibitors and programming that meets the needs of landscape professionals and retail garden centers.
Held in Kansas City, Missouri each January, The Western is well-known for its programming. The 2018 event features:
- A trade show
- A fashion show of new plants and plants with purpose
- Educational sessions
- Networking opportunities
